COMPLIMENTS LEAVE ME UNAFFECTED, I EVEN FIND THEM TIRESOME

Eugene’s retreat reflection leads him to examine his reactions to others. This is one of those texts of Eugene one hesitates to publish in the 21st century, yet it forms part of the true picture of this 19th century man! His “politically incorrect” opinions aside, the text does show that he was uncomfortable with exaggerated compliments.

Compliments coming from women or people leave me unaffected, I even find them tiresome. The reason is that they give them to all and sundry and without discernment.
I pay little heed either to those of libertines, etc., as they are superficial, insincere, etc. This could well be a consequence of my pride. I must strive to be as indifferent to those coming from basically sound people as to those from silly women, etc. I would have made great strides if I got to that point.

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Oblate Associate says:

Interesting to note that no-one posted a comment about this one. I want to tell Eugene that he probably hung around the wrong crowd of women. So I listen and hear the voice of a young Eugene and think (or hope) that he will “level” out as he ages, will lose some of the fear and will grow in wisdom – which I believe he did.

As before though I understand why he says what he does. It is too easy to get caught up in ourselves and our own greatness! And that I believe is one of the traps that can derail us so incredibly fast. This is certainly something that I need to pay attention to in my life. Not that there are hoards of compliments coming my way, but sometimes just a few is all it takes!

But oh Eugene – if you could read my mind now!
