WE CELEBRATE WITH GREAT JOY AND GRATITUDE THE 196TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PAPAL APPROBATION OF OUR CONSTITUTIONS AND RULES AS THE MISSIONARY OBLATES OF MARY IMMACULATE
A letter from Father Louis Lougen, Superior General and successor of St Eugene de Mazenod:
Dear Brother Oblates, and all our Sisters and Brothers committed to living the Oblate Charism,
We celebrate with great joy and gratitude the 196th anniversary of the papal approbation of our Constitutions and Rules as the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate! May we share in the profound conviction of Eugene de Mazenod that this approval was the work of divine Providence. St. Eugene insisted on this in a letter to the Oblates in France on February 18, 1826. In the same letter, filled with the recognition of God’s intervention on our behalf, he recognized: “Somewhat puny as we are, being weak and few in number, we nonetheless have an existence in the Church no less than that of the most celebrated bodies, the most holy societies.” It was with eyes of deep faith, that Eugene saw and believed the Gospel paradox: God chose what appeared to be weak and insignificant for the vast mission of evangelizing the poor…

I find myself focusing on Fr. Louis’ words: “…God chose what appeared to be weak and insignificant for the vast mission of evangelizing the poor…”
Do I really believe that?
Sometimes we are asked to walk through our fears and to continue on the path that we have been chosen to walk…
I stop for I realize that it is not me doing the saving or the evangelizing, it is God working through me, through my weakness and fears. God knows what God is doing. As I have sat here this morning, I have come to the realisation that I have been asking God over and over again to prove yet again that I am loved but all the while not listening to his response.
I have struggled with this morning’s offering, realizing my own weakness and smallness. All that is left to say is to repeat the words of Mary: “Let it be done unto me according to Your word.”
Tomorrow I will celebrate with all of you our 196 years as a family. Tonight with my many brothers and sisters I will renew my commitment as an Oblate Associate and then I shall sing with Mary her canticle:
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord
And my spirit exalts in God my Savior
For He has looked with mercy on my loneliness
And my name will be forever exalted
For the mighty God has done great things for me
And His mercy will reach from age to age
And holy, holy, holy is His name.
