THEIR REMEMBRANCE WILL NEVER BE ERASED FROM MY MEMORY NOR FROM MY HEART

Eugene, as the founder of a religious family, was an affectionate father for each of its members.

The joy of having given a new priest  to the Church and to the congregation did not make me forget that on the same day, twenty-two years ago, our outstanding and very zealous Fr. Marcou was to take possession of heaven. I do not know whether my remembrance will last for long in the heart of my spiritual children, always is it that theirs will never be erased from my memory nor from my heart.

Eugene’s Diary, 20 August 1848, EO XXI

REFLECTION

Today Saint Eugene’s affectionate fatherhood continues to be extended to each member of the Mazenodian Family. He continues to watch over us and intercede for us in the communion of the saints.

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate Associate says:

“…always is it that theirs [loving forgiveness] will never be erased from my memory nor from my heart.”

Such a love that Eugene lived. He was a very human person, yet he opened his heart to all – affording a small glimpse of some of his sorrows. I think of the passion and vehemence with which he scratched out the name of Icard, yet I am sure that Eugene did not stop loving him – that is where the sorrow comes into this. “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” (Lk 23:34)

While Jesus was betrayed and crucified he also forgave with a love that trumped all else. Forgiveness is something that the lover might struggle with, might seem overwhelmed with, yet eventually love will conquer all. We struggle with the remembered pain even as we yearn to love. It is love that creates us: love is the basis of all conversion and which once given can never be taken back. It is with great love and respect that the potter’s hands form us into works of love.

“We remember how you loved us to your death
And still we celebrate, for you are with us here…
We remember, we celebrate, we believe.” (John Michael Talbot)
