THE HUMAN SPECIES MANAGED WITHOUT THIS FILTHY NARCOTIC BEFORE ITS DISCOVERY WAS MADE

I couldn’t resist sharing this snippet from Eugene’s letter to the novice master in England.

Keep firm control lest the abuse of tobacco be introduced into your novitiate. Be quite sure that it is only a mania. The human species managed without this filthy narcotic before its discovery was made. How can anyone wish to be persuaded that he cannot live without it? I speak seriously. One could feed a missionary with what this absurdity costs…

To Fr. Charles Bellon, in England, 13 June 1849, EO III n 28

REFLECTION

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate Associate says:

As I sit with this snippet from Eugene I find myself reflecting not on some of the ways that I tried to cope with and hide my fears of being inadequate, not good enough, not smart enough… I was addicted to many things so as to not feel empty within myself. Gratefully I came to realise that God would not leave me alone and that I wanted to change. I wanted to move from simply surviving to living. It was not a matter of the cost, but of me wanting more than a living death.

Daring to join with all of you here this morning I have reflected on how I live as part of this beautiful Oblate/Mazenodian Charismatic Family. I am far from perfection, yet still I yearn to be in communion with the Beloved and all who I meet. I do not sit alone in my tent (ref. Isaiah 54:2) but rather I run out to greet those who are poor in spirit. It is then that the “I” becomes “we”.

“When faced with the demands of our mission and the needs to be met, we may feel weak and helpless. It is then that we can learn from the poor, especially making our own their patience, hope and solidarity.” (C 20)
